How often should you wash your clothes?

hoe vaak kleding wassen

How often should you wash your clothes? Is it better to wash them too often or not often enough? It sounds like an easy question, but knowing the right answer really helps keep your clothes looking great for longer. We're going to find out how often you actually need to wash your clothes. It's better for your clothes and also saves water and energy. Let's discover together how to keep your clothes fresh while also doing something good for our planet!

Pay attention to how often you wash your clothes

How often you should wash your clothes is important to keep them fresh and looking good. But washing them too often isn’t great either. It also depends on what kind of clothes they are and how you use them. For example, things you wear directly on your skin, like socks and underwear, should be washed after every wear because they absorb sweat. But jeans or sweaters don’t need to be washed as often.

Washing frequency of different clothing items

When you do your laundry, you should know that not everything needs to be washed equally often. Some things need to be washed more frequently than others. It depends on how close they are to your skin and how much you sweat.

  • Underwear and Socks: These items should be washed after every use. They come into direct contact with your skin and absorb sweat and bacteria, so it's important to clean them after each wear to keep things hygienic.
  • Bras: You don’t need to wash your bras after every wear. You can wear them 3 to 4 times before they need a wash, as long as you’re not sweating a lot or it’s not too hot. When it’s time to wash, use a hand wash cycle or pop them in a special lingerie bag to keep them protected in the washing machine.
  • T-shirts and Blouses: You wear these items directly on your skin, so they can quickly absorb body odors. That's why it's best to wash them after wearing them 1 or 2 times.
  • Jeans and Pants: Jeans and other sturdy pants don't need to be washed after every wear. As a general rule, you can wash your jeans after about 4 to 5 wears, unless they're visibly dirty or smell bad.
  • Sweaters and Cardigans: How often you need to wash them depends on whether you wear an undershirt. With an undershirt, you can wear a sweater up to 6 times before it needs a wash. If you don’t wear an undershirt, it’s best to wash your sweater after just 1 or 2 wears.

How do you care for special garments?

  • Jackets and Blazers: You don't need to wash these after every wear. Usually, after wearing them 5 to 7 times, it's time for a wash, depending on how much you've used them and how dirty they've gotten. The best thing you can do is take these items to the dry cleaner, especially if they're made of wool or silk. Prefer to wash them at home? Then make sure the gentle laundry strips wool & silk for a fresh, clean laundry.
  • Sportswear: Of course, you sweat a lot in sportswear. That's why it's recommended to wash your sports clothes after every use. To keep the fibers in top shape after many washes, use a mild detergent and a gentle cycle for delicate fabrics.
  • Sleepwear: Pajamas and other nightwear can usually be worn 2 to 3 times before they need to be washed, unless you sweat a lot at night. Wash sleepwear on a gentle cycle with similar colors to keep them fresh and in great condition.

Bedding and towels

How often should you wash your bedding?

Your bed is a place where you spend hours every night, so it's important to wash your sheets and pillowcases regularly. Ideally, you should wash your bedding once a week. This helps remove dust mites, skin flakes, and sweat that collect in the fabric, keeping your sleeping environment fresh and clean.

How often should you wash your towels?

Towels are exposed to water, soap, and body oils every time you use them, and can quickly collect bacteria. It's best to wash your towels after no more than three uses. By letting your towels dry properly between washes, you help reduce the growth of bacteria and mold.

It's super hygienic to wash your towels on a hot cycle—this kills bacteria and keeps them nice and fresh. By washing your bedding and towels regularly, you keep your home clean and reduce the risk of allergies and skin irritations.

Tips to do laundry less often

Make your laundry last longer between washes

Not every piece of clothing needs to be washed after every wear. By being smart with your clothes and only washing them when it’s really necessary, you can make your clothes last longer and save on water, energy, and detergent.

Using scent boosters and fabric refreshers

If your clothes aren't dirty but just need a little freshening up, try scent boosters like fabric refreshers or hang them outside for a bit. This is especially handy for items like jeans or sweaters that you want to wear a few times before tossing them in the wash.

Proper storage of clothing

Make sure to store your clothes properly. Hang your clothes in a well-ventilated closet and consider using scented sachets with lavender or cedarwood to keep your closet and clothes smelling fresh. This not only helps prevent unpleasant odors, but also keeps moths away.

We've talked about how often you should wash your clothes. Turns out, not every piece needs to go in the washing machine after every wear. By choosing smartly when to do laundry, you can keep your clothes looking great for longer and save water and energy at the same time. From socks and underwear that need a wash after every use, to jeans that only need cleaning after several wears, finding the right laundry rhythm really matters.
