What is candle sand?
Candle sand is a fine-grained wax that allows you to easily make candles without melting. You do this by pouring it into a bowl, adding a wick, and lighting it. Candle sand is often made from natural or plant-based wax and was created as a healthier and more creative alternative to traditional candles.

Why has candle sand become popular?
Candle sand is often made from a biodegradable material that is healthier than paraffin candles. As a result, such sand candles produce less smoke and emissions while burning. This ensures cleaner air quality indoors.
What’s also fun about candle sand, unlike traditional candles, is that you can place it in different bowls and let it burn. Candle sand is not in a fixed shape, allowing you to create endless combinations. Has half of your candle already burned down? Then you could put the candle sand into a smaller bowl. Want a seasonal candle today (for Christmas, for example) and a romantic atmosphere tomorrow? Then remove the wick from the candle and pour the candle sand into another nice bowl.
How do you make a sand candle?
Candle sand is easy to use because you can decorate it in any container or bowl. You need two things:
- Candle sand - available in vanilla and sandalwood scent or unscented.
- A bowl for the sand candles - Cosmeau’s bowls have a perfect diameter and depth of 10.5 cm. The deeper the bowl, the longer the candle will burn.

Step 1
Choose a heat-resistant bowl that fits the decoration you want to create. Glass jars or ceramic bowls are usually used. Make sure the bowl is stable and has no cracks.
Step 2
Slowly pour the candle sand into the bowl until you are satisfied. You can create layers or patterns with different coloured sand in a glass bowl. You can also make sand mounds for decoration or gently shake the bowl for an even distribution.
Step 3
Stick a wick in the centre of the bowl. For a larger bowl, you could also insert multiple wicks. Make sure the wicks stand upright, extend at least 1 cm above the sand, and have 4 cm of space around them.
Step 4
Light all the wicks and enjoy the lovely atmosphere! When you want to extinguish the candle, blow gently from above so the sand stays in place. Once the candle has burned out, you can remove the wick and reuse the remaining sand in a smaller bowl.

Candle sand safety tips
- Use heat-resistant bowls - Think of glass jars, ceramic bowls, or metal containers. Avoid plastic or other materials that can melt or catch fire.
- Keep a safe distance from flammable materials - Never place candle sand near curtains, paper, or other combustible objects.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended - Stay nearby and extinguish the flame before leaving the room or going to sleep.
- Keep the wick short - A wick that is too long can cause a large flame and unnecessary smoke. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before lighting the candle.
- Do not use volatile oils or perfumes on the sand - It is important to use special scented candle oils and not regular essential oils or perfumes. These can be flammable and cause dangerous situations.
