🏭 Production update
We thought we could complete the move in a few weeks, but we are still right in the middle of it. You probably know the feeling: as soon as you open one cupboard, more comes out than you expected.
Most of the stock has now been moved to the warehouse, with around 20 pallets still to go. We can now sort and organise the raw materials, followed by the preparation work for detergent production. After that, we will give the current machines their place. Our packing section and logistics have already fully moved over.
From lab test to machine
To make the bio-film, we currently use a special lab machine. It allows us to produce a thin film, but for now only in a small format: about half an A4 sheet at a time.
At the start, we immediately ran into a fundamental problem: we were able to make a liquid formulation, but as soon as we spread it out, the material pulled together into small “islands” instead of forming one even film.
That turned out to be a major challenge.
Together with specialists in material and machine development, we eventually found a solution. We tested extensively with different ratios, surface tension and material combinations until we were able to produce a stable, thin strip.
We spent a huge amount of time on that in the early phase, but it became the foundation for everything that followed.
Then the next big question came up: drying time.
To speed up development, we deliberately chose to first gain full control over the film and formulation before optimising directly for mass production. We already have the right machines to process films further. The biggest challenge was first developing a well-functioning bio-film.
By experimenting with different raw materials, drying methods and process settings, we have already managed to reduce the drying time significantly. At the same time, the big question remains: can this scale industrially?
To test that, we then had a special machine built that can produce longer films than our original lab machine.
Last month, we used it to produce a bio-film of more than one metre for the first time, exactly the film we previously shared in a photo. For us, that was a hugely important moment in the development process.
Behind the scenes, we are working hard on the next generation of detergent and have taken several more steps in the process. Not only on a new formula, but also on a new production process. That is technically complex: quality, scalability, costs and speed all have to come together.
Still, this is exactly why we started Cosmeau. We want to be less dependent on distant production, have more control over what goes into our products and ultimately produce in the Netherlands.
Almost all laundry sheets on the market still come from far away or still contain PVA. We are building a better alternative step by step, together with experts in material and machine development. If all goes well, we will receive another new test machine in June, with a production process that is more scalable and less labour-intensive. That matters for keeping costs low once we scale, built on all the experience and tests from the past period.
It is taking longer than we would like, but the direction is clear: better detergents, shorter chains and production closer to home.
Thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the beautiful days!
