Black spots and stains in washing machine rubber?

Zwarte Stipjes en Vlekken in Wasmachinerubber?
Black spots and stains on the washing machine rubber are usually caused by dirt, trapped moisture, or early mold buildup. This article explains how to clean it properly and prevent it from coming back.

Recognizable? You open the washing machine and see it again

You just want to do some laundry. The drum looks clean. You pick up the laundry… and then you see it:black dots and stains in the rubber rim of the washing machine. Sometimes small as dots, sometimes larger spots. And the funny thing is: you clean that rubber regularly, right?

If this sounds familiar, this is one of the most common and most annoying cleaning problems in your home.

What are those black dots in the washing machine rubber?

In almost all cases it is aboutmold and bacterial attack. The rubber cuff of the washing machine is warm, moist and continuously collects residues of:

  • Laundry detergent

  • Fabric softener

  • Dirt from clothes

  • Standing water after washing

That makes it the perfect place for microorganisms. The black dots are often the first visible sign — and they usually appearsooner than you think.

Why the washing machine is so sensitive

Many people find it extra frustrating because a washing machine is intended for cleaning.

But this works against you:

  1. Modern washing machines are washing more and more oftenlow temperatures

  2. Detergent residue remains in the rubber

  3. The door often remains closed after washing

  4. The rubber edge folds, causing water to remain in it

Even in a 'clean' machine, these conditions can cause mold to grow.

Why those dots keep coming back (even after cleaning)

Maybe you have already tried:

  • Vinegar or soda

  • Bleach

  • Scrub hard with a cloth

Often the dots disappear for a while, but come back. That's because:

  • Moldsoaks into the rubber, not just on it

  • Aggressive means the rubberdamage or dry out

  • Leftover residues actually stimulate new growth

So the problem is not only dirt, but also structure and use.

This is how you tackle black dots in the washing machine rubber

Step 1: Clean specifically

Use a product that dissolves mold but does not damage the rubber. Let it work for a while, especially in the folds of the cuff.

Step 2: Don't forget the folds

Carefully pull off the rubber edge. There is often more deposits there than you think.

Step 3: Rinse and dry thoroughly

Residues + moisture = new dots. Dry the rubber completely after cleaning.

Prevention: this way you really keep the rubber clean for longer

These are small habits with a big effect:

🚪 Leave the door open

After every wash. Always. This way moisture can evaporate.

🧴 Less is often better

Do not use more detergent or fabric softener than necessary. Excess residue remains in the rubber.

🔥 Turn it hot every now and then

An empty wash at 60–90°C helps to reduce build-up.

🧽 Wipe the rubber every week

No major cleaning, but a quick check will prevent new spots.

🧼 Use a Cosmeau deep cleaning tablet monthly

Keep track of everything easily with our washing machinedeep cleaning tablet. Once a month, put a tablet in an empty drum, set it to the highest temperature and that's it!

When is cleaning no longer enough?

Like the black spotsare deep in the rubberand no longer become lighter, the rubber is permanently discolored. This does not mean that your machine is dirty, but it does mean that the material is damaged.

In that case:

  • Can you still inhibit further growth?

  • But existing stains often do not disappear completely

That insight alone saves a lot of frustration.

Finally

Black dots in the washing machine rubber are not a sign of poor hygiene. They arise slowly, invisibly, and almost everyone experiences them.

The difference is not in harder cleaning, but inunderstand why they occur and how to prevent them.
