Unfortunately we didn't manage to launch your new customer account this month. We're still working hard on it and hope to finish it next month. It's quite a job, but managing your orders, returns and subscriptions will be a lot faster and clearer. Work in progress 💪
🏭 Production update
Good news! We're making a huge amount of progress, both in the formulations and in the production process itself.
The formulations are almost done. The tests are promising and we're still checking a few assumptions. For that we're waiting on other ingredients and on test results. There is so much we can improve and test that our entire roadmap for next year is already full. From very innovative new ingredients to more environmentally friendly alternatives: in the coming years we're going to turn the detergent industry upside down on every front.
The "impossible" task of producing this affordably in the Netherlands has also come a step closer. In our previous mailing I mentioned that we were having two test machines built, with different production methods, to spread the risk. That turned out to be the right choice.
With the first machine we had a huge number of problems: too much air entrapment, solidification, blockages, and trouble with stable heating and calibration.
The other machine solved almost all of these problems. These are purely practical issues you can't account for on paper during the design. Next week extra parts arrive, and then we'll have solved all the major bottlenecks for semi-mass production. The specifications for the next machine, without these flaws and with extra efficiency improvements, have been designed and sent off. They are now awaiting approval and will then go into production as soon as possible.
So the biggest question has been answered for us: we can produce this 100% at volume in the Netherlands 🎉
Alongside producing the detergent itself, which is what everything depends on, we're working on packaging at the same time. In manufacturing, packaging can be even harder than production. That's why in China, and often enough in the EU too, it's still done by hand.
Since we've already chosen this impossible mission, why not solve the packaging problem right away too? We now have that 90% mapped out, and here too we're waiting on parts. To be able to switch and test quickly, we bought a semi-industrial 3D printer that can print large designs.
That way we test assumptions faster and then send the 3D model straight to a manufacturer, who makes the parts from, for example, metal or aluminium.
Because we design the production lines ourselves and make the formulations ourselves, we can tune everything 100% to our packaging line. The result is a symphony of machines and production processes that are completely aligned with each other. That lets us achieve incredible output and efficiency on a limited budget.
For packaging we've also already set out a multi-year plan. We start small, but already take into account how it should look two years from now. That way we can work efficiently and make the right long-term decisions.
We're now preparing for semi-mass production and finishing the formulations as soon as possible. With the experience from this line we'll sketch out the big picture, so that early next year we can fully automate and run real mass production.
One of the biggest mistakes in manufacturing is automating before you've solved all the errors and fully understand every practical process. That's why semi-mass production is the only right step now: first become experts at that, then fully automate.
