When we were at the household fair, we noticed that a lot of visitors are allergic to laundry detergent and/or fabric softener. Many have eventually found a solution in a product, but after that, they're hesitant to try anything new. Even though they’d actually like to try a different scent or something new, like laundry detergent sheets.
From experience, we also know that most people who are allergic to certain ingredients or have eczema respond well to our detergents. This is partly thanks to our milder, plant-based formula.
Why are some of us allergic to laundry detergents?
Laundry detergents contain a range of chemical ingredients designed to make our clothes clean and fresh. Think of fragrances, colorants, preservatives, and optical brighteners. However, these substances can trigger allergies in sensitive people. Those with sensitive skin or existing allergies may experience symptoms like itching, rashes, redness, or even breathing problems after exposure to these chemicals.
Perfumes and fragrances
Added perfumes and fragrances in detergents and fabric softeners can irritate your airways and skin. Most people are allergic to Limonene. Our scents contain little to no Limonene. That’s exactly why we chose them! Go for Spring Fresh, Lavender, or Cloud Cover if you’re allergic to this. Or, of course, try our fragrance-free laundry strips—they’re hypoallergenic too.
Eczema and laundry detergents
A particularly sensitive group of people are those who suffer from eczema. Eczema is a common skin condition that’s characterized by red, itchy skin that can flake, crack, and bleed. For people with eczema, exposure to the chemicals in laundry detergents can make symptoms worse and even trigger new flare-ups. It’s important for people with eczema to be careful when choosing detergents and to avoid products with harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin. For this group, we recommend our fragrance-free option. Hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested for sensitive skin.
Solutions for laundry allergies
Luckily, there are several ways to prevent or reduce allergies caused by laundry detergents:
-
Choose hypoallergenic detergents: There are detergents available that are specially made for people with sensitive skin, allergies, or eczema. These products usually contain fewer harsh chemicals and no added fragrances.
-
Choose natural alternatives: Consider using natural laundry detergents made from plant-based ingredients and free from artificial additives. Vinegar and baking soda are also great, eco-friendly substitutes for traditional detergents.
-
Rinse thoroughly: Make sure to rinse your clothes well after washing to remove any leftover detergent that could cause allergic reactions.
-
Try alternative washing methods: If you notice you're still having allergic reactions even after switching to hypoallergenic detergents, consider trying alternative washing methods, like using laundry balls or washing at lower temperatures.
Doing laundry might seem like an innocent chore, but for people with allergies, sensitive skin, or eczema, it can be a real source of irritation. Luckily, there are alternatives! With Cosmeau’s plant-based laundry sheets and scent boosters, you’ve got even more options to choose from!
With our pledge for local production this year, we're also making sure we have more control over the ingredients used throughout the entire process.
