Laundry Does Not Smell Fresh After Washing? This Is Why (And How You Fix It)

Was Ruikt Niet Fris Na Het Wassen? Dit Is Waarom (En Zo Los Je Het Op)

You take a load of laundry out of the machine, bring your nose to the laundry and... musty. Not fresh. Sometimes even downright nasty. Familiar? You are not the only one. It is one of the most common laundry problems and luckily also one of the easiest to solve.

Why does your laundry smell musty?

There are a few culprits that are almost always the cause. The most common:

1. Your washing machine is dirty

Sounds odd, but your washing machine does not clean itself. With every wash, leftover detergent, limescale and dirt stay behind. Especially in the rubber seal, the detergent drawer and the drum itself. Over time a layer of bacteria and mould forms there. And that smell? It goes straight into your clean laundry.

2. Wet laundry sits too long

We all know it. The washing machine is done, but you are just doing something else. Two hours later... musty. Damp clothes in a closed drum are a paradise for bacteria. Try to take your laundry out of the machine within an hour.

3. Too much detergent

Yes, really. More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. In fact: leftover soap does not rinse out well and stays as a sticky layer on your clothes. That layer attracts dirt and bacteria, and that is where the nasty smell comes from.

4. Washing at a low temperature

Washing at 30 degrees is fine for the environment and your clothes, but it does not kill all bacteria. Towels, sportswear and bedding in particular can get a musty undertone after a while if you always wash cold.

5. Poor ventilation while drying

Do you dry clothes indoors without good air circulation? Then drying takes longer and bacteria get a chance to multiply. Result: musty laundry, even though it was just washed.

How you fix it (step by step)

Step 1: Clean your washing machine

This is the basis. Once a month, run an empty wash programme at 90 degrees. Use special washing machine cleaning tablets that remove limescale, dirt and bacteria. Cosmeau Deep Clean Tabs are developed for this: you throw one in the drum, run a hot programme and your machine is fresh again.

Also remember to take the detergent drawer out regularly and rinse it, and wipe the rubber seal dry after every wash.

Step 2: Dose your detergent properly

Less is more. Follow the recommended dose on the pack. With laundry sheets, overdosing is impossible, because you use exactly the right amount per wash. No measuring, no spilling, no leftovers.

Step 3: Take your laundry out quickly

Set a timer if you have to. But take that laundry out of the machine within an hour. And leave the washing machine door open afterwards so the drum can dry.

Step 4: An occasional hot wash

Wash your towels and bedding at 60 degrees every few times. That kills the bacteria that survive at 30 degrees. You do not have to wash everything hot, only the items that need it most.

Step 5: Add a scent that really lasts

This is where the difference is. Fabric softener gives a light scent that is gone after a day. Wasparfum and scent pearls are more concentrated and hold the scent much longer, sometimes for weeks in your wardrobe.

Cosmeau Wasparfum you add in the fabric-softener compartment. You decide how much you use, depending on how intense you want the scent. And the nice part: unlike fabric softener, scent pearls leave no greasy layer on your clothes. They dissolve fully and rinse away cleanly.

Top scents? Lentefris is the bestseller, followed by Cherry Blossom for anyone who wants it a bit sweeter. Zeebries is perfect if you like a fresh, clean scent.

The combination that always works

Want to really get rid of that musty smell? Tackle it at the source:

  1. Deep Clean Tabs for a clean washing machine (1x per month)
  2. Laundry sheets for the right detergent dose (every wash)
  3. Wasparfum or scent pearls for a long-lasting, fresh scent

Those three together make musty laundry a thing of the past. No overkill, just getting the basics right.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use vinegar to remove the smell?

Vinegar can help with an occasional musty wash, yes. But it is not a structural solution. If you have to add vinegar every time, there is an underlying problem (usually a dirty washing machine or too much detergent).

How often should I clean my washing machine?

Once a month is enough for most households. Do you wash a lot at low temperature or have a large family? Then you are better off doing a maintenance cycle every two to three weeks.

What is the difference between wasparfum and scent pearls?

Wasparfum is liquid and goes in the fabric-softener compartment. Scent pearls are small beads that you throw straight into the drum with your laundry. Both give a long-lasting scent. The difference is mainly in how you add it and personal preference.
