Why does your laundry smell musty?
There are a few culprits that are almost always the cause. The most common:
1. Your washing machine is dirty
Sounds odd, but your washing machine does not clean itself. With every wash, leftover detergent, limescale and dirt stay behind. Especially in the rubber seal, the detergent drawer and the drum itself. Over time a layer of bacteria and mould forms there. And that smell? It goes straight into your clean laundry.
2. Wet laundry sits too long
We all know it. The washing machine is done, but you are just doing something else. Two hours later... musty. Damp clothes in a closed drum are a paradise for bacteria. Try to take your laundry out of the machine within an hour.
3. Too much detergent
Yes, really. More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. In fact: leftover soap does not rinse out well and stays as a sticky layer on your clothes. That layer attracts dirt and bacteria, and that is where the nasty smell comes from.
