Spring cleaning 2026: the ultimate room-by-room guide

Every year the same. It gets a bit warmer, the sun shines a little longer and suddenly you see all the corners and gaps you just did not tackle over the past months. Grease behind the extractor hood. Dust behind the radiator. A bathroom that needs a deeper clean than the weekly wipe.

Spring cleaning is not a ritual from the past. It is simply the most logical moment to really reset your home. And with the right approach it is less work than you think.

The Bedroom: freshness starts here

Why it feels different in spring: In the winter months your bedroom is warmer and less ventilated. House dust mites love warmth and humidity. Mattresses, pillows and duvets collect more over time than you want to know.

1. Flip or rotate the mattress
Do this at least twice a year. Reduces wear and gives the mattress space to recover.

2. Wash pillows and duvet
Synthetic pillows can go at 60C, duvet on the delicates programme. Dry them well through, including the inside.

3. Wash bedding at 60C
That removes house dust mites effectively. For light laundry we use the Cosmeau laundry sheets for white laundry, for the rest the regular laundry sheets.

4. Wash or beat out curtains
Curtains catch an enormous amount of dust. Most can go on a cold wash or hand wash.

5. Under the bed
Dust and vacuum. Including that forgotten corner between mattress and wall.

Did you know: The average adult loses about 1,5 grams of skin per night. That is food for house dust mites. Washing at 60C kills them.

The Kitchen: deeper than a daily wash-up

The kitchen is cleaned daily, but the yearly deep clean is another level.

Extractor hood filters: Those grease filters have probably been in there for months. Take them out, soak them in warm water with cleaning product. Or replace them. It really makes your kitchen fresher.

Cupboards and drawers: Everything out, wipe the inside, including the corners. While you are at it: throw out what you no longer use.

Fridge: All trays out, wipe the inside with a damp cloth. Watch the seals around the door: those quickly go black from mould.

Clean the washing machine: A cleaning cycle every two months is enough to prevent musty smells. Cosmeau Deep Clean Tabs are for that. A tablet in the drum, 60C, done.

Did you know: A greasy extractor hood does up to 40% less work. Air circulates worse and you cook faster in a damp, smelling kitchen.

The Bathroom: clean is not always hygienic

The bathroom is the place where most dirt sits invisibly.

Tile grout: That quickly goes dark from limescale and mould. A good brush with all-purpose cleaner works well. Let it soak, scrub, rinse.

Shower drain: Not the nicest job, but do it anyway. Hair, soap and limescale pile up.

Toilet bowl under the rim: Also use the inside of the rim. Bacteria grow there that you would rather not have.

Wash towels at 60C: Towels may get a real wash at a higher temperature more often than you think. Not at 30C, because that does not clean well enough.

Tip for that fresh feeling after the wash: add Cosmeau scent pearls when washing bathroom textiles. Up to 12 weeks of scent that is released during use.

Did you know: Wet towels are already after 3 to 4 uses a breeding ground for bacteria. Switching and washing is health hygiene, not an exaggeration.

The Living room: forgotten places

The living room often already looks clean. But take a proper look.

Behind and under furniture: Move the sofa aside. You may not have moved the sofa for months.

Sofa cushions: Take the covers off if you can and wash them. Otherwise beat them out well outside.

Windows inside: As soon as the sun shines you really see it. Warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid works excellently.

Radiators: Vacuum the fins. That literally helps heat transfer and stops dust blowing away as soon as the heating comes on.

Did you know: The air in your home is on average 2 to 5 times dirtier than outdoor air. Ventilating regularly helps more than most air-cleaning products.

The Laundry: spring cleaning for your wardrobe

Store winter clothes: Wash everything before you store it. Stains you ignore now will be visible later and harder to remove. Use laundry sheets for black laundry for dark clothes, that way you keep colours better.

Sportswear: Not at 60C, but thoroughly. Do not use fabric softener, because that affects the moisture-wicking ability.
