Smelly washing machine? How to get rid of the odour

Stinkende wasmachine

It is not unusual to have a smelly washing machine. This problem is common and luckily it is fixable. But why does your washing machine suddenly smell so bad? We can think about these 3 causes:

1. Dirt buildup and detergent residue: Washing machines often collect detergent and fabric softener residue, together with dirt from clothes. This residue can settle in hidden corners and behind the door seals, which leads to a musty smell.

2. Low wash temperatures: More and more people wash at low temperatures. That is good for saving energy, but if you always wash at a low temperature, mould and bacteria get a chance to live in your washing machine. That causes a nasty smell.

3. Scrud: If you use too much detergent, a greasy layer can sit in your washing machine. We call this scrud, and it is not an insect, but a bacterial biofilm. This scrud is a feeding ground for bacteria and can cause a rancid smell. Read more in this article about what scrud is and how you can specifically tackle scrud in your washing machine.

How do you tackle a smelly washing machine?

Follow these steps to get your washing machine smelling fresh again:

1. Clean the detergent drawer

Remove the detergent drawer from your washing machine.

Soak it in hot water with a little washing-up liquid to remove detergent residue and mould.

Rinse it well and dry it before you put it back.

2. Clean the rubber seal

Inspect the rubber seal (the door gasket) for objects and detergent residue.

• Dampen a cloth with water and wipe the seal thoroughly. Focus on spots where moisture, detergent residue and dirt collect. Only use another product if your machine's manufacturer allows it.

3. Run a cleaning programme

• Place one washing machine deep-clean tablet in the empty drum. Do not use vinegar or baking soda as an equivalent alternative to a full deep clean.

Set the machine to the hottest cycle with an extra rinse to remove all residue thoroughly.

4. Clean the filter

Check and clean the filter at the bottom of the washing machine (see the manual for the location).

Unscrew the filter, remove dirt and rinse it under running water.

5. Leave the washing machine open

After every wash, leave the washing machine door open. This helps the inside dry and prevents mould and bacteria from growing.

How you avoid a smelly washing machine

To stop your washing machine becoming a breeding ground for unpleasant smells, regular maintenance is essential. Here are some practical tips to keep your washing machine clean and fresh:

1. Clean the rubber seals: The rubber seal at the door of your washing machine can easily hold dirt and moisture. Wipe it with a dry cloth after every wash and once a month use a damp cloth with a mild cleaner to prevent residue buildup.

2. Maintain the detergent drawer: Detergent drawers can collect detergent residue and mould, which adds to the smell. Take the drawer out regularly and clean it thoroughly under running warm water. Use an old toothbrush if needed to remove stubborn dirt.

3. Run a hot empty cycle monthly: use one washing machine deep-clean tablet at 60°C or 90°C. This helps tackle grease, detergent residue, organic dirt and limescale. Always follow your machine's manual.

4. Check and clean the filter: The filter catches objects and dirt that could otherwise damage the machine. Check the filter monthly and clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions so your washing machine keeps working efficiently.

5. Inspect the drain hose: Make sure the drain hose of your washing machine is not blocked or kinked. Disturbed water flow can lead to stagnant water in the machine, which can cause smell.

If you maintain your washing machine regularly, the chance that it starts to smell is very small. Start with cleaning the rubber seals, the detergent drawer and the filter. And if you also run a hot wash regularly, you keep your washing machine clean and fresh.
