Sweat odour from sportswear? 5 tips that really work

Zweetgeur uit sportkleding? 5 tips die écht werken

Sportkleding die na het wassen nog steeds naar zweet ruikt? Je bent niet de enige. Ontdek waarom dit gebeurt en welke 5 methoden écht helpen.

That one running shirt. After three washes it still smells musty. You have tried extra detergent, thrown fabric softener in, even washed at 60 degrees. But as soon as you put it on again, that familiar sweat smell hits you.

Frustrating? Absolutely. But it is not you. It is the fabric.

Why sportswear holds onto sweat smell

Sportswear is almost always made of synthetic fibres: polyester, nylon, elastane. Fantastic for moisture wicking during exercise, but there is a downside. Those fibres have an oily structure that bacteria like to attach to.

And those bacteria are the culprit. Not the sweat itself (that is largely water), but the bacteria that feed on the proteins and salts in your sweat. They nest deep in the fibres and easily survive a normal wash, especially at low temperatures.

Another common mistake: fabric softener. That lays a film over the fibres so water and detergent cannot get in properly. Bacteria stick even better. The opposite of what you want.

5 methods that do remove sweat smell

1. White vinegar (the classic)

Soak your sportswear for an hour in cold water with a generous splash of white vinegar (about 1 cup per litre). Vinegar is acidic enough to kill bacteria and breaks down sweat residues. Then just into the washing machine.

Be careful with clothes that contain a lot of elastane. Vinegar can affect elastic fibres over time.

2. Washing soda

Not to be confused with baking soda. Washing soda is stronger and works better against stubborn odours. Dissolve 2 tablespoons in a litre of warm water, let your clothes soak for a few hours and then wash as normal.

3. Rinse out immediately after exercise

The easiest prevention: rinse your sportswear immediately with cold water after exercising. That gets the sweat out before bacteria get a chance to nest. Simple, effective, free.

4. Forget the fabric softener

Seriously, do not put fabric softener with your sportswear anymore. It actually makes the fabric harder to get clean. Sportswear becomes soft by itself from washing. That extra layer of chemicals only works against you.

5. Wash as warm as the label allows

Check the care label and go as high as possible. A lot of sportswear can handle 40 degrees fine, some even 60. That extra warmth makes the difference between "smells okay" and "smells really fresh."

The smart approach: choosing the right detergent

Those household remedies work fine, but it is always an extra step. Want to keep it simple? Then your detergent choice makes the biggest difference.

Detergent with bio-enzymes tackles sweat residues more effectively at low temperatures. Cosmeau laundry sheets contain those enzymes and already work from 30 degrees. No fuss with soaking or vinegar, just a sheet in the drum.

In really stubborn cases (you know them: that shirt that has smelled for months) you can try Deep Clean Tabs. They give your sportswear a thorough reset.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash sportswear with ordinary laundry?

Yes, but if your sportswear really smells, wash it separately. Odour bacteria can jump to other garments.

Does the freezer help against sweat smell?

Not really. Freezing does not kill the bacteria, it only slows them temporarily. As soon as the clothes are at room temperature again, they just continue.

My sportswear already smells after wearing it once. What now?

Then bacteria have already nested deep in the fibres. Time for a thorough reset: soak it overnight in vinegar or soda, wash at the highest possible temperature, and from now on no longer use fabric softener.
