Household vinegar is often mentioned as a DIY washing-machine remedy. It can help reduce light limescale, but it is not a complete deep cleaner. For grease, detergent residue, biofilm and stubborn odours, a specially developed washing machine cleaner is the better and more accurately dosed choice.
What can household vinegar actually do?
Because of its acidic composition, household vinegar can help dissolve light limescale. That is why it appears in many household tips. The effect is limited, though, and it varies by use, dose and machine.
What are the downsides of vinegar in the washing machine?
- No complete deep clean: vinegar contains no surfactants that loosen grease and detergent residue and no sodium percarbonate for tackling organic dirt.
- Risk to parts: acid can, with repeated or incorrect use, damage rubber seals and metal parts.
- No fixed dose: DIY advice varies widely, so the result is not consistent.
- Not suitable for every material: always follow the manufacturer's instructions for clothing, seals and machine parts.
Can you combine vinegar and baking soda?
We do not recommend this combination as a replacement for a washing machine cleaner. The dose and action are not designed for a full cleaning cycle. Baking soda can help neutralize odours, but it does not tackle grease, detergent residue, bacteria and limescale in the same complete way as a formulated deep cleaner.
How do you clean the washing machine thoroughly?
- First check the manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
- Clean the detergent drawer, the filter and the rubber seal by hand with a damp cloth and water.

- Run a programme at 60°C or 90°C, without laundry.

Why a deep-clean tablet?
The Cosmeau tablet combines ingredients with different jobs. Sodium percarbonate and surfactants help tackle organic dirt, grease and detergent residue. Citric acid and zeolite help with limescale, while sodium silicate helps protect metal machine parts. That makes the action broader and the dose more consistent than vinegar or baking soda.
