What is candle sand and how do you use it?

Wat is kaarsen zand en hoe gebruik je het?

What is candle sand?

Candle sand is a fine-grained wax that lets you make candles easily, without melting anything. You pour it into a dish, add a wick and light it. Candle sand is often made from natural or plant-based wax, and it started as a healthier and more creative alternative to traditional candles.

We will look at why candle sand has become so popular, and how you can use it to add more atmosphere to your home.

Why has candle sand become popular?

Candle sand is often made from a biodegradable material that is healthier than a paraffin candle. That means a sand candle produces less smoke and emissions while burning. This helps keep indoor air cleaner.

What is also fun about candle sand, unlike traditional candles, is that you can put it in different dishes and burn it. Candle sand is not a fixed shape, so you can make endless combinations. Has half of your candle already burned away? Then you could move the candle into a smaller dish. Want a seasonal candle today (for Christmas, for example) and a romantic atmosphere tomorrow? Then take the wick out of the candle and pour the candle sand into another nice dish.

How do you make a sand candle?

Candle sand is easy to use, because you can decorate it in any bowl or dish. You need two things:

  1. Candle sand - this is available in vanilla and sandalwood scent or unscented.
  2. A dish for sand candles - Cosmeau dishes have a perfect diameter and depth of 10,5 cm. The deeper the dish, the longer the candle will burn.

Optional: Add essential oils for candles to unscented candle sand for extra fragrance

Step 1

Choose a heat-resistant dish that matches the decoration you want to make. Glass jars or ceramic dishes are usually used. Make sure the dish stands firmly and has no cracks.

Step 2

Pour the candle sand slowly into the dish until you are happy with it. You can use different colours of sand to make layers or patterns in a glass dish. You can also make little mounds of sand for decoration, or gently shake the dish for an even spread.

Step 3

Stick a wick in the centre of the dish. In a larger dish you could also insert several wicks. Make sure the wicks stand upright, stick out at least 1 cm above the sand and have 4 cm of space around them.

Step 4

Light all the wicks and enjoy the atmosphere! When you want to put the candle out, blow gently from above so the sand stays in place. Once the candle has burned down, you can remove the wick and reuse the leftover sand in a smaller dish.

Candle sand safety tips

  • Use heat-resistant dishes - Think of glass jars, ceramic dishes or metal tins. Avoid plastic or other materials that can melt or catch fire.
  • Keep enough distance from flammable materials - Never place candle sand near curtains, paper, or other flammable objects.
  • Never walk away from a burning candle - Stay nearby and put the flame out before you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Keep the wick short - A wick that is too long can lead to a flame that is too large and unnecessary smoke. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before you light the candle.
  • Do not use volatile oils or perfumes on the sand - It is important to use special candle fragrance oil and not regular essential oils or perfumes. These can be flammable and cause dangerous situations.

Frequently asked questions about candle sand

Can candle sand be reused?

Yes, candle sand is designed with reuse in mind. After burning, the unused sand stays clean and can easily be collected and used again. Remove the cooled, hardened wax around the wick and store the leftover sand in an airtight container for later use.

How do I add scents to candle sand?

Although candle sand is often unscented, you can personalize it by adding fragrances. Mix a few drops of essential oil or candle fragrance through the sand before you pour it into the container. Note: do not add scents while the candle is burning, because that can be unsafe.

Which dishes are suitable for candle sand?

You can use candle sand in almost any heat-resistant container. Think of glass jars, ceramic dishes or metal tins. For smaller designs, tealight holders also work. Make sure the container is sturdy and not flammable.

Is candle sand environmentally friendly?

Candle sand is often made from natural wax. This material is biodegradable and emits fewer harmful substances while burning. Reusing the sand also keeps waste to a minimum.

How long do candles made from candle sand burn?

The burn time of a candle made from candle sand depends on the amount of sand and the size of the wick. In general, a well-filled dish with Cosmeau candle sand can burn for 120 hours.

What should I do if the wick has burned down?

If the wick has fully burned down, you can easily reuse the leftover candle sand. Remove the hardened wax residue and place a new wick in the sand. That makes candle sand a durable and cost-efficient choice.

Is candle sand safe to use?

Yes, as long as you follow the basic safety rules. Always use heat-resistant containers and place the candle on a stable surface, away from flammable materials. Never leave a burning candle unattended and keep the wick short to prevent excessive smoke.

Make your indoor space atmospheric with a sand candle you decorated yourself

Candle sand is a healthier and more creative way to light your home with atmosphere. Whether you want a cosy evening or a unique decoration for guests, candle sand offers endless possibilities. You simply pour it into a dish, place a wick and light it. You can also adapt it fully to your taste.
