You take your white T-shirt out of the washing machine and it looks... dull. Not dirty, not stained, just that muted grey that slowly takes over all your white laundry. Familiar? You are certainly not the only one. This is one of the most common laundry problems and luckily also one of the easiest to solve.
Why does white laundry turn grey?
That grey haze on your white clothes almost always has one of these causes:
Too much detergent. Sounds odd, but this is by far the most common reason. Too much detergent does not rinse out fully. That residue stays in the fibres and attracts dirt. After a few washes you see the result: a dull veil over your white laundry. The irony: you try to get your clothes cleaner by using more detergent, but you make it worse.
Limescale. Do you live in an area with hard water? Then limescale leaves mineral deposits in the fibres. That coating gives your white laundry a grey, dull look. The harder your water, the faster this happens.
Washing with colours. Even lightly coloured clothes can bleed a little. You do not see it after one wash, but after ten, twenty times that colour transfer starts to become visible. Dark socks or jeans in particular are well-known culprits.
A dirty washing machine. If your washing machine itself is full of soap residue, mould or limescale, it simply washes that dirt into your clothes. Check the rubber seal of your washing machine: if there is a grey or black layer on it, you have found your culprit.
Fabric softener. Just like too much detergent, fabric softener leaves a film on your clothes. That layer catches dirt and makes your white laundry dull over time.
How you get white laundry bright white again
1. Soda or washing soda (the fastest solution)
Fill a bucket or tub with warm water and dissolve 2 generous tablespoons of washing soda in it. Let your dull white laundry soak in this for a few hours, preferably overnight. Then wash as normal in the washing machine. In most cases one treatment is enough to see the difference.
2. White vinegar in the rinse
Pour a cup of white vinegar into the fabric-softener compartment of your washing machine. Vinegar dissolves limescale residues and removes detergent residue from the fibres. Your clothes will not smell of it, promised. It evaporates fully during drying.
3. Baking soda as a booster
Add half a cup of baking soda to your detergent at the next wash. It boosts the action of your detergent and helps make white laundry brighter again. It works best if you do this regularly, not as a one-off.
4. Sun as a natural bleach
Grandma already knew: drying white laundry outside in the sun works as a natural bleach. UV radiation breaks down the molecules that cause greying. Free, effective, and your clothes smell wonderfully fresh.
5. Dose your detergent correctly
This is prevention rather than a cure, but it is the most important. Do not use more detergent than the pack states. With laundry sheets overdosing is impossible: each sheet contains exactly the right amount. No guessing, no spilling, and no residue left in your clothes.
6. Clean your washing machine

Can I use bleach for dull white laundry?
You can, but it is not ideal. Bleach attacks the fibres so your clothes wear faster. With repeated use it can actually cause a yellow tint. Soda and vinegar are safer and often just as effective.
Does it help to wash white laundry at a higher temperature?
Partly. Higher temperatures remove residue better, but 60 degrees is enough in most cases. Above 60 degrees your clothes wear faster. Combine a normal temperature with the right amount of good detergent for the best result.
